Philosophy of Music

In den letzten Jahren hat sich die philosophische Reflexion über die Musik zu einer vielverzweigten Debatte verdichtet, die weit über die universitäre Forschung hinaus die künstlerische Produktion und die Institutionen der Musikrezeption erfasst und transformiert hat. Im Kern dieser Debatten steht die Frage, wie sich Musik heute als Kunst begreifen lässt. Die Frage lässt sich in drei Richtungen auslegen: Was taugen erstens die tradierten Begriffe der Musiktheorie angesichts der Vielgestalt des gegenwärtigen Musikschaffens? Wie steht zweitens die Musik im Feld der Künste? Und wie verhält sich drittens die künstlerische Arbeit am Klang zur gesellschaftlichen Wirklichkeit, in der sie sich vollzieht?

Die Forschungsstelle Musikphilosophie hat zum Zweck, die verschiedenen Stränge dieser Debatte zusammenzuführen und auf ihre begrifflichen Grundlagen zu prüfen. Dies geschieht im Rahmen von Publikationen, Lehrveranstaltungen für Studierende der Universität und der Musikhochschule, Konferenzen und öffentlichen Veranstaltungen, welche künstlerische Produktion und wissenschaftliche Reflexion verbinden. Die Forschungsstelle ist eine Zusammenarbeit zwischen der Universität und der Musikhochschule Basel.

In recent years, philosophical reflection on music has condensed into a many-branched debate that has encompassed and transformed artistic production and the institutions of music reception far beyond university research. At the core of these debates is the question of how music can be understood as art today. The question can be interpreted in three directions: First, what is the value of the traditional concepts of music theory in the face of the diversity of contemporary musical creation? Second, what is the position of music in the field of the arts? And third, how does the artistic work on sound relate to the social reality in which it takes place?

The Research Center for the Philosophy of Music aims to bring together the various strands of this debate and to examine their conceptual foundations. This is done within the framework of publications, courses for students of the university and the conservatory, conferences and public events, which combine artistic production and scientific reflection. The research center is a collaboration between the Philosophy Department of the University of Basel and the Musikhochschule FHNW Basel.
